Walter Ray Williams Jr. Takes Home Bowler of the Year ESPY


Walter Ray Williams Jr. brought home his sixth Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Wednesday night at the ESPY awards show in Los Angeles. The show will be shown tape-delayed on ESPN on Sunday, July 16, at 9 p.m. ET.

Highlights of Williams’ 2005-06 season include:
• Equaled Earl Anthony for most career Tour titles when he won his 41st title in the 2006 Denny's World Championship.
• Won his seventh career Major Title (Denny’s World Championship), one shy of Anthony's record eight Majors.
• Set a Tour record by going a perfect 475-475 on match play single-pin conversion attempts.
• Led the Tour in match play spare percentage (87.37), match play average (230.77) and match game win percentage (99-69, .589).
• His $183,500 in season earnings ranked fourth on Tour and marked the 12th time in the last 13 seasons he went over the $100,000 mark.
• His 223.65 season average ranked third on Tour, marking the 16th consecutive season he finished in the top eight in average.
• Made three championship round appearances, the 20th consecutive season he's made at least three finals.

Other nominees for the award included 2006 Dexter Tournament of Champions winner Chris Barnes, 2005-06 Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones and Norm Duke, the 2005-06 PBA points leader.

The 14th annual ESPYS were presented by Under Armour and GMC and were hosted by cyclist Lance Armstrong. This year’s show marks the first time in ESPY history that the show has been hosted by an athlete.
